Easter Chicks

It’s that time of year, and with the calls we’ve been getting asking about chicks, I thought it wise to post on the subject.

Irrigating our small field adjacent to the house

We have a 3/4 ac field adjacent to the house that we are using for our CSA.  One of our issues is; how to get water to it on such a small scale?

Raising Chickens on Knotty Bottoms Farm

Raising chickens has been described as a relatively easy way of growing your own meat on very little land.  Chickens take up relatively small amounts of space, have simple care needs, and are definitely one of the cheaper livestock animals that you can purchase.  That’s why when we decided to venture into livestock, chickens were our first choice. Husqvarna 355fxt

We’re at a point now where there is hardly any more that we can reach with the brush hog. So came time to decide, clear a calculated 6-8 acres of fence line by hand, or buy a tool to do it. Who am I to say no to a new toy.

2010′s Vegetable Garden

This year we decided to use the field beside the house for a vegetable garden.  Thankfully that field was one of the less overgrown, without any saplings or large trees to clear.  After struggling for several hours with a gas powered tiller we had enough room to plant a large vegetable garden (considerably larger than ones we’ve done in the past but I was hoping for a challenge).  Now that we’ve come to the end of the season, its time to tally up what we’ve taken out of our vegetable patch and the lessons we’ve learned.

Plowing under an over grown field

Our farm has been let to overgrow for many years, to the end that there were multiple generations of prickly ash, buckthorn, maple etc that needed to be removed or mowed.  This made plowing an interesting adventure to say the least.
